His Excellency, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Qusay Al-Suhail called on Ministry’s formations, universities and research centers to be cooperative with the Crisis Cell concerned to confront the epidemic of Corona virus. Dr. Al-Suhail directed using specialized laboratories in the universities to diagnose and detect the virus according to the various governorates. His Excellency said that the Ministry’s specialized staffs will be fully cooperative with the Crisis Cell of the Ministry of Health. Dr. Al-Suhail added that Ministry’s Deputy for Legal and Administrative Affairs, Dr. Hamid Khalaf will be responsible on this procedure in a manner that is appropriate with the needs of the current stage. During a participation in the International Conference on Natural Resources in Lyon, France, Researchers in the Department of Geology in the College of Science, University of Baghdad reviewed the latest inventions, innovations, developments and the most accurate technologies on the sustainable management of natural resources, capacity development and transfer of modern information in the fields of geology, environment, climate change, production and sustainability systems, marine sciences, renewable energies, soil, plants, hydrology and modern science in agriculture and geometrics. The Conference, in which a number of researchers participated, also reviewed capacity development, technology transfer, exchange of experiences in research and studies in the field of geometrics and its sciences, the latest technological developments, new scientific innovations, programs of natural resource management, the latest research and advanced developments, as well as new applications and technologies and exploration of emerging trends in climate change, environment and geology. A research team in the Directorate of Renewable Energies, merged Ministry of Science and Technology reviewed a new project to produce biogas and organic fertilizers with a system of 10 cubic meters. The project aimed at treating organic and agricultural waste into a flammable biogas that can be used for cooking, lighting, heating, electricity generation and liquid organic fertilizer that rich in nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorous compounds as well as using it for irrigating soil. It is worth mentioning that the system is characterized by its durability, resisting to weather conditions, treating of 300 kg of organic and agricultural waste daily, can be built under and above the ground and near homes and contributing in preserving the environment because of it disposes of polluted organic waste, reduces harmful greenhouse gases and benefits the agricultural and remote areas. Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research obtained top ranking in Scimago Institutions Ranking (SIR) as well as the SIR reviewed the progress of 21 Iraqi universities within Scopus databases. The faculty member in the College of Science, University of Baghdad, Mrs. Alyaa Mohammed Hadi obtained an online international certificate from the World Health Organization for passing the course on the organization’s website on infection COVID-19 and limiting its spread. Mrs. Alyaa said that the course reviewed three online modules, the first was on new Corona virus (COVID-19), its characteristics and its ferocity, the second was on the level of State responses and their willingness to this virus via correct scientific guidance and planning and the third was on how to reduce the risk of Corona’s virus after becoming a deadly international pandemic. Mrs. Alyaa added that the course also reviewed the public health response to prevent the spreading of the epidemic in light of having health facilities and laboratories and successful diagnosis as well as increasing the commitment to health awareness among citizens via reporting, recording injuries, healing cases, epidemiological follow-up of the virus with the help of health staffs inside countries and spreading a culture of prevention of spreading the virus. During a participation in a workshop on molecular diagnostics by University of Science and Technology / Princess Haya Biotechnology Center in Jordan, National Controlling Board, merged Ministry of Science and Technology reviewed methods of training on using the PCR device to diagnose microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses to find effective treatment and produce vaccines. A research team in the Centre of Geophysics Research, Directorate of Space and Communications, merged Ministry of Science and Technology conducted a research in detecting cracks of concrete blocks using ground penetration radar. The research reviewed detecting air gaps and cracks in concrete during the casting process, as these gaps reduce the strength of reinforced concrete. The research aimed at conducting radar network surveys of concrete to obtain accurate data on their components via using an antenna with a frequency (1 GHz) as well as results highlighted the possibility of using high frequencies for GPR antennas in testing concrete in terms of the number of reinforcing layers, the number of iron bars, the distance between them and detecting accurate and the large defects and their depths and sizes. A joint research team in the College of Science, University of Al-Mustansiriyah obtained a patent on preparing combined material of chitosan and the Australian tea tree oil extract (Melaleuca alternifolia) to be used in extending the life of the locally produced citrus reticulate after the harvest. The patent, in which granted by the Central Organization for Standardization and Quality Control Unit of the Ministry of Planning, reviewed that the new material will be used as a substitute for traditional fungicides in sustaining the lifetime of the Citrus reticulate and protecting it from damage after harvest in order to reduce the economic losses to farmers. The patent highlighted that the new material is eco- friendly that decomposes to its main components, with its high efficiency in preserving citrus fruits from damage and decaying after harvest. College of Administration and Economics, Al-Iraqia University organized a workshop on e-learning and a distance learning program. The workshop, in which a number of faculty members participated, reviewed steps of using the application by faculty members to deliver the lectures to students in term of the daily lessons. College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Diyala held a course on chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear accidents (CBRN) and addressing mechanism. The course reviewed the concept of (CBRN), reason behind chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear accidents, their consequences and how to address and treat their effects as well as reducing the damage toward people and environment. The course also reviewed the risk of misusing knowledge, techniques or experiences in using or intending to use CBRN for dangerous purposes, as well as addressing main elements for risks of using CBRN and responding effectively to potential incidents. The course recommended forming CBRN teams, their tasks, methods of work in the field, raising the awareness of responding to crises of misuse of chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear factors (CBRN) by unauthorized persons or non-governmental agencies that cause a major threat to the individual, community and environment.
